writing threads

Oh that reminds me, I started a podcast with my friend Stephanie. This is a very fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants endeavor. It’s called Writing Threads and you can listen to it on Spotify, Apple, Google, Castbox, and podcast places like that. You can also click the words “Writing Threads” above and you will be taken to Anchor, which is where we create the podcast.

We are learning as we go. We are floating along with it. All we have time for as caregivers and people is one-ish hours of recording a week, no editing, and simple distribution. It’s freeing and fun to not stress about any of it. This is maybe part of midlife for us, this letting go of getting it “right”.

That leads me to the last episode (see Steph’s quote above). It was a hard one, it was uncomfortable to not try to get it “right”. Most of it is me asking Stephanie about her experiece with fundamental Christianity, a certain “brand” of it. It can be difficult for us to find words, but we fumble through all human-like and I think that’s it’s appeal. We are doing it, just going ahead and winging it, and it’s been a whole lotta fun, even when we talk about hard things.

In our conversations after recording and sharing the show, Stephanie and I have come to realize we are still holding on to keeping other people’s feelings safe, at least to some degree. We don’t want to offend. But that’s part of the history of our programming, ironically. This conversation we’re having on a podcast is opening up a new level of healing, and that’s good even if it’s scary at times.

Sometimes what you’ve experienced and decided is right for you because of it doesn’t agree with other people. And the fear then comes from all the times you’ve been outright told you are wrong and bad for coming to your conclusions, no matter how true they feel for you. It’s confusing. No matter how long we’re around, this will most likely bubble to the surface. I’m deciding to heal and accept at the same time. It can be both. I can accept there will always be some level of trauma response in me, and I can also decide to use it for good.

(You can follow the show on the Writing Threads Facebook page as well, if you’d like.)

Our podcast description: To tell our stories is to pull at their threads, unraveling the truths that make us. We are Stephanie Wilson and Heather Westberg King and we love everything raw and real. This podcast is a conversation about how it feels to unravel the threads of our old stories, and live well with the strong soul threads that stay. With candid conversation and brave readings of well-written essays, we plan to shine a light on the writers and creators that aren’t overly famous but should be. This is a podcast for people that love the power of story. Join us.
